Not oversold, not dismissed

Not a cure. Not nothing either.

If you have Hashimoto’s, you’ve probably been handed two opposite stories: the clinic version, where nutrition barely comes up, and the internet version, where one supplement promises to fix everything. Neither is honest. Nutrition will not cure Hashimoto’s, and we won’t say otherwise. But the idea that food and nutrients make no difference is just as wrong: there’s real, peer-reviewed research behind a handful of them.

Hashimoto’s is autoimmune: your immune system wears the thyroid down over time. Medication replaces the hormone; it doesn’t touch the immune process underneath, and it was never designed to. Nutrition can’t switch that off either, but the research suggests it can help take some of the load off.

Where the evidence actually is

Three places the research points.

  • Selenium: your thyroid holds more selenium than any other tissue. Several systematic reviews link selenium supplementation with lower thyroid peroxidase antibodies, one of the main markers of the immune attack. Not a cure, but a real, worthwhile thing to support.
  • Vitamin D: low vitamin D turns up again and again in autoimmune thyroid conditions. It plays a role in regulating the immune system: the very system misbehaving in Hashimoto’s.
  • Zinc & gut: zinc supports the immune system and the conversion of thyroid hormone into its active form. There’s a genuine thyroid-gut axis: gut health shapes inflammation and nutrient absorption, both part of the autoimmune picture.
01

Selenium supplementation has been associated with lower thyroid peroxidase antibody levels in people with Hashimoto thyroiditis across multiple trials.

Huwiler et al., 2024 · Thyroid (systematic review & meta-analysis)
02

Vitamin D status is significantly associated with autoimmune thyroid disease across the pooled evidence base.

Wang et al., 2015 · Nutrients (meta-analysis)
03

The thyroid-gut axis connects gut health, inflammation and nutrient absorption to thyroid autoimmunity.

What we left out

The one ingredient we left out, deliberately.

In Hashimoto’s, more iodine is not better. For a thyroid already under autoimmune attack, extra iodine can worsen the process you’re trying to settle. Yet iodine, often from kelp, is one of the most common ingredients in supplements marketed for thyroid health. That’s the single biggest reason ThyroBase has no added iodine and is kelp-free, and why what does have evidence behind it (selenium, vitamin D, zinc, gut-supporting probiotics, omega-3 from flaxseed) is in it instead. Not a cure. A daily foundation, designed to sit alongside your medication, never instead of it.

What’s in it

A daily foundation, not a promise to fix you.

AM · Pineapple + Cardamom

Selenium

Selenium

Bioavailable selenomethionine at a researched dose. Powers the body’s antioxidant selenoenzymes.

Vitamin D3

Vitamin D3

Plant-sourced D3, a daily top-up to support what sunshine and diet provide. Supports immune function and wellbeing.

Zinc

Zinc

Zinc gluconate at a researched dose. Supports immune function and the integrity of skin, hair and nails.

PM · Chocolate + Cinnamon

Probiotics

Probiotics

Live cultures chosen for gut support, not for chasing the biggest number on a label. Paired with prebiotic fibre.

Magnesium

Magnesium

The most documented mineral for sleep onset and quality (Abbasi, 2012, RCT). Citrate form, well-absorbed.

Passionflower and grapeseed

Passionflower + Grapeseed

Passionflower is studied for anxiety-driven sleep onset. Grapeseed brings OPC polyphenols for antioxidant support.

The opposite way, on purpose

A different approach to thyroid nutrition.

Most thyroid supplements are built on iodine and kelp, the two things people after a thyroidectomy, on RAI, or with Hashimoto’s are most often told to be careful with. Some things aren’t up for debate.

Questions, answered

Before you decide.

Will ThyroBase lower my antibodies?

We can’t promise that, and anyone who does is overselling it. The research on selenium and antibody markers is real but it’s not a guarantee for any individual. ThyroBase is a nutritional foundation, not a treatment.
